Mark Pilkington Management (MPM) had reason to celebrate Saturday night with a ‘pinch me is this really happening?’ day at the track.

Luvaluva, Lady of Crebilly, and the stand out Merchant Navy in the Coolmore G1 were all first past the post in the recognisable Seymour Bloodstock racing silks.

These three big winners, each with different trainers, backgrounds, and purchase prices all came to fruition in very different ways, though Derby Day 2017 is where their success collided and the Pilkington led acquisitions were proven.

Mark Pilkington
“ Identifying the right horses with the right trainers who embrace our HTP packages. Our procurement procedures are widespread, thorough and with no rock unturned.”

“Identifying the right horses is the foundation of all our success and we will continue to be dogged and diligent in equal measure.”

Luvaluva
Winner Group Two Wakeful Stakes
Luvaluva was purchased at a ready to run sale. The John Sargent collaboration came when we decided to stop bidding against each other and collectively pay the $55,000 for this non-commercial bred filly with a beautiful action.

Lady of Crebilly
Winner 3yo 1400m Morphettville
A $7,500 Adelaide yearling purchase’s offset knee didn’t put off the MPM team as she is an otherwise terrific specimen with a pedigree to match, she now heads to the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes at Sandown.

Phil Stokes initially wondered what sort of cripple we had sent him given the price. With five career starts and prize money nearing $70,000, this 3yo ‘Lady’ is only getting started.

Merchant Navy
Winner Group One Coolmore Stakes
Merchant Navy’s was an impressive $350,000 yearling purchase by Cairon Maher and was always on MPM’s radar at the yearling sales.

“Once we make up our minds about a yearling we like, we’ll watch for who buys them,” said Mark Pilkington. “If we like the horse, the price paid and the trainer then I seek to enter the ownership. So with Merchant Navy, we took the major share of 30% in him.”

So there is much to celebrate for Mark Pilkington Management with the Spring Carnival in full swing as well as a couple more MPM hopefuls to watch throughout the week.

Looking forward…

Cup Day
A similar scenario to Merchant Navy, Aristocratic Miss, running in the 2yo 1000m Group 3 Emirates Stakes. Tony McEvoy bought her for $65,000 at Melbourne Premier sales with Seymour Bloodstock holding 50%.

Oaks Day
Mark Pilkington Management bought Woulda Thought So from the 2016 Magic Millions sales one out. She is running in the 1800m Listed race on Oaks Day.

–

Keen Array (pic. Sharon Chapman)

A long-time association with Lindsay Park Racing and a roving eye for rising talent has again proven to be a winning combination for, Mark Pilkington, who cheered on as Keen Array added to his array of black type success in Saturday’s Listed Fight Cancer Testa Rossa Stakes at Caulfield.

Keen Array, a 4YO gelding by Bel Esprit from Moorea, had originally been passed in at the 2014 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale and, as a consequence, breeder, Oliver Wong, decided to race the horse himself. Sadly the owner, who had also raced 2015 Australian Oaks winner, Gust of Wind, passed away after Keen Array had just two starts.

“I had seen Keen Array at Lindsay Park a few times and was really quite impressed with him,” Pilkington explains. “So, when the opportunity came up to purchase the horse I didn’t hesitate and formed a syndicate with some good friends. It’s been a good result.”

It certainly has. Keen Array’s victory in the Testa Rossa Stakes was by no means resounding and co-trainer, Tom Dabernig, later quipped that the “winter coat was probably the difference” in the tight finish, but Keen Array clearly got the job done and now has five wins and four placings from his 13 outings for $598,050 in stakes.

Keen Array was also winner of the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield last October and backed it up a fortnight later with a fast finishing second behind Japonisme in the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby Day.

In what may be a portent for national racing and breeding, Keen Array also carries the increasingly familiar silks of Darren Thomas’ Seymour Bloodstock.

“Darren is CEO of Thomas Foods International, Australia’s largest meat processing company, and he is an avid investor in the Australian thoroughbred industry,” Pilkington points out. “Darren is also a partner in my Horse Training Packages company and, aside from Keen Array, he also races Don’t Doubt Mamma and He’s Our Rokkii.”

It’s certainly been a big couple of weeks for Pilkington/Thomas with Don’t Doubt Mamma taking her black type tally to four with a win in the previous Saturday’s Group Two Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington, while dual Group winner, He’s Our Rokkii made it a Caulfield double for Pilkington’s packages when scoring two races on from Keen Array.

“The business is certainly going along very nicely,” Pilkington confirms. “Last season we had 20 three year olds on our books … 18 of those raced for 16 individual winners and five of those won at black type level. Aside from Keen Array, Don’t Doubt Mamma and He’s Our Rokkii, there’s further stakes winners in Extra Choice and Risque, while we also race Group Two winner, He Or She.

“We’re obviously very pleased with how the Horse Training Packages product has developed and are in the process of appointing a new national manager to take it to a broader market in the months and years ahead.

“It’s all about sustainable racing and that means a focus on improving the viability of both trainer and owner. The key is to offer transparent, fixed price training without any surprises.”

That said, horses like Keen Array are always the right kind of surprises!

Erinvale Thoroughbreds’ John Kenneally wasn’t all that surprised when Keen Array was passed for just $25,000 in Melbourne: “He was foaled and raised at Coolmore in the Hunter Valley and was a lovely bodied horse, but wasn’t great in front and a little close at the knees. I thought that would end up holding him back a bit, but there was a lot to like about the horse despite that. It just goes to show you that a few issues don’t hold the good ones back.”

Coolmore Australia was the ‘source’ for another stakes winner on Saturday too with Winx also raised on the property.

“It was a very good day for the farm as both Winx and Keen Array, as well as Denpurr, were foaled and raised here,” Coolmore Australia’s Stud Manager, Jim Carey, reveals. “Keen Array was part of a particularly strong crop and would have shared paddocks with the likes of Vancouver, Pride Of Dubai, Japonsime and Rangipo as a foal. The team on farm enjoy following the graduates: there’s a lot of pride in the success of our horses and it’s a real team effort.”

Plunge galloper, the enigmatic Wall Street Wolf was purchased after a Geelong trial for $150,000 and this weeks dominant debutant and Caulfield Guineas aspirant Gunn Island was procured at last years NZ ready to run sale for $130,000.

The Racing.com Park win of The Andrew Noblet trained Napoleons War last week clocked up a milestone for Darren Thomas’ Seymour Bloodstock. “Mark Pilkington and I have been selectively sourcing stock and we have 20 3yos and on our books that we have either bred or bought as yearlings or tried horses”, said Thomas. ”Of the 17 to get to the track Napoleons War became our 14th individual winner this season ( 82.4% W/R strike rate). To have won 28 races and have 5 individual stakes winners ( 35.7% SW/W strike rate - He’s Our Rokkii, Keen Array, Don’t Doubt Mama, Risque, Extra Choice ) from this group has been most satisfying. Most of our horses are on HTPs ( a discounted prepaid annual training package developed by Pilkington) which has made the journey all the more enjoyable for my partners. We can’t thank our trainers enough- David Hayes, Andrew Noblet, Cairon Maher, Tony McEvoy, Leon MacDonald and Johnny McArdle have all won with a 3yo of mine this season.” He added. Heorshe’s big win in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes in the famous Gary Lechte colours provided the Spring highlight for Seymour Bloodstocks older brigade.

Seymour Bloodstock’s now familiar colours will be seen in other stables next season as Gai Waterhouse, Bjorn Baker, Anthony Cummings, Phillip Stokes, Neville Parnham, Clinton MacDonald and Jason Warren all have young horses for Thomas. ‘We have also given support to Trent Bussutin and Natalie Young who are moving to Cranbourne. They and their clients have embraced our discounted pre payment model ( HTP). They have an outstanding record with Victorian and AJC Derbys already in their trophy cabinet. We have 4 horses in work with them and look forward to their Aussie debuts. ” said Thomas.

The owners of G1 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist were holding their breath when the previously undefeated All American filly Yankee Rose started to reel him in at Rosehill on Saturday.

That was in stark contrast with the elation of Geisel Park Stud owner Eddie Rigg who had just inked the deal to stand the former outstanding 2yo All American in Western Australia this year.

“I was sure we had the right horse in All American prior to the Slipper but I’m pinching myself now that Yankee Rose has announced herself as the real deal,” Rigg said. “She heads the market for the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes and looks a bona-fide star in the making.

“I’ve always dreamed of getting the next Scenic for WA and while recent additions to sire ranks of Snippetson, War Chant and Dash for Cash have been terrific, they join our champion sire Blackfriars in the twilight of their careers.

“So I enlisted the services of Mark Pilkington who identified and sourced Scenic for Durham Lodge back in 1999. ‘Pilko’ mentioned All American had a very similar sire profile as Scenic did at the time of his acquisition and when we looked into him we agreed,” Rigg continued. “He had bought him as a yearling and fortunately still managed some of the part-owners’ interests so we were able to facilitate a deal.”

All American (Red Ransom) will stand at a very competitive $10,000 (+ gst) introductory service fee at Geisel Park. And there are 15 early-bird nominations at $7000 (+ gst) to reward those breeders who recognise All American’s undeniable claims on future Westspeed premierships.

“The heaving lifting has been done by Arrowfield Stud and the All American syndicate,” Pilkington said. “His oldest progeny are only four and he has big numbers of quality stock to follow.

“His first crop included the top-class Gerald Ryan galloper Bachman, the best Team Hawkes 2yo Invisible plus the highly-regarded Eisenhower from the Waterhouse yard. And his second crop included star miler Green Card who was sold to Hong Kong for a reported $1 million when at the top of the early Caulfield Guineas markets.

“His yearlings have been popular selling to $360,000. On the back of a wonderful 2yo crop this year that also includes Lindsay Park’s Moonee Valley winner Rampage, All American has had 22 yearlings sell to $160,000 at an average of $69,000 this year. And he provides a wonderful outcross for mares of all backgrounds.”

An outstanding pre-Christmas Stakes winning 2yo, All American ran second in the Blue Diamond, an unlucky fifth in Sebring’s Golden Slipper then raced on to win the Emirates Stakes. In running the fastest ever Flemington mile by an entire, he left international star So You Think in his wake when he was in career best form.

“All American had the physique of a 3yo miler yet was one of my fastest and precocious 2yos,” Hall of Fame trainer David Hayes explained. “He trained on to beat the world champion at four and he retired as sound as he raced. My vet never saw him and I wish I had another one like him.”
